Chickens still banned under proposed Hamilton exotic pet rules

After receiving public feedback, Hamilton's planning committee has unanimously approved staff recommendations for changes to the pet ownership bylaws.
While staff originally proposed a ban on tarantulas, they are now permitting three docile breeds.

They are also allowing certain snakes under three metres long to be kept as pets - but venomous snakes and lizards will be banned. Jeff Reynolds from reptilestore.ca says the current pet bylaw overlooked exotic pets and these new recommendations will help with regulating reptiles.

"It was really something that was overlooked it was our understanding that unless you were being irresponsible with your animal they would basically leave you alone. But if you were creating problems in your neighbourhood or you were scaring people or being irresponsible, then yes they would step in and a lot of people would lose their animals."

As part of the responsible animal ownership bylaw, there will now be no limit to the number of pets you can own in Hamilton. One exception: chickens. They'll remain banned in urban areas.

The recommendations still need to be ratified by city council.

Yay Hamilton, finally some change in the right direction regarding animal control. However the ban on roaming cats still needs to be lifted, otherwise Animal Control will continue to pick them up and euthanise them. Keep your cat inside until this law changes. Also low cost spay and neuter needs to be publicised by the SPCA.
