A Port Colborne bed and breakfast owner is upset over a bill she received for an annual fire inspection. $621.50 that’s how much the city of Port Colborne is charging owner Judith Boroniec for a fire inspection, a job that takes about a half hour. Last year she only paid $170.

With the busy season coming to end at Talwood Manor bed and breakfast, Boroneic says the fourfold increase comes as a total shock. She is the only bed and breakfast operating in the city at the moment, councillor John Mayne says the city has to do a better job at keeping small businesses like this one here.

In September of last year council raised its fire department fees for the first time since 2007. According to the fire chief an inspection includes, checking fire alarms, extinguishers and evacuation plans. He says he understands Boroniec’s frustration. City council is expected to review the fee at next council meeting.
