A hydro pole in St. Catharines has some pedestrians scratching their heads. The newly-erected hydro pole was placed right in the middle of the sidewalk.

It all started when councillor Matt Siscoe was driving on Martindale road when he noticed this hydro pole sitting in the middle of the sidewalk. He snapped a picture and posted it to twitter.

The pole in question is near a fire station and was moved by Horizon Utilities Thursday as part of Niagara region’s Martindale road widening project. According to Horizon Utilities, the pole needed to be relocated in advance of the construction work. A temporary asphalt bypass has been put in to ensure that people who uses strollers, wheel chairs or walkers will be able to get by. They also placed reflective markers and pylons for pedestrians who may be walking and not paying attention.

The utility company says they’re replacing and moving 84 hydro poles along that stretch of road, only two will be built into the existing sidewalk. Pedestrians will have to get use to the pole for now. It will be about a year before the widening project gets under way.
