A little less scrambling for visitors at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton.

Beginning Monday, the hospital is expanding visiting hours to a 12-hour window; from 9am to 9pm. The change was recommended by it’s patient and Family Advisory Council. It’s expected to benefit relatives, especially shift workers who in the past struggled to make the 6-hour window between 2 and 8. But it’s also a benefit to patients.

Dr. Hugh Fuller works with St. Joseph’s Healthcare:  “It’s been proven in the studies and the literature, if we involve families and loved ones in the patients care and involve the patients to a greater degree with the care providers, the outcomes are improved. They feel more emotionally supported, they will have their medications taken more accurately. And a number of other quality and safety advantages.”

Although not all area hospitals provide 12-hour visitor access, Dr. Fuller says extended hours are becoming more common globally.
