This week’s home video releases feature big explosions and tiny creatures, plus a few great indie options are also heading to store shelves. Cobie Smulders shows up twice on Netflix this week in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back and their new original series Friends From College. Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray was given the keys to the eighth instalment of the Fast franchise and delivered a pretty solid sequel to the behemoth that was Furious 7, bringing in $1.2M worldwide thanks to a simultaneous release in 64 countries. That wasn’t enough to beat Furious 7, but it does make it the second highest grossing film of the year so far behind Beauty and the Beast. The film will be available on both 4K and standard Blu-ray formats and includes audio commentary by Gray, an extended director’s cut of the film, and featurettes on the film’s production in Cuba and the Fast family of characters.

Sony pulled the plug on its live-action/animation hybrid Smurf franchise and rebooted it this year as a fully animated adventure. The move didn’t help bring audiences back however – The Lost Village made only $196M worldwide. No word yet on whether Sony will continue with the animated franchise or shelves the little blue guys for a little while. A 4K version of the Blu-ray is available, with both formats featuring audio commentary from some key crew, deleted scenes, and tons of other fun features for kids to enjoy.
