It almost seems like a daily occurrence that emergency crews in Hamilton respond to a distress call for someone who has fallen down high heights requiring a rope rescue. So far, firefighters have conducted seven rope rescues this summer and these operations are costing the city thousands of dollars each time.
It can take up to 30 firefighters, a dozen EMS workers and police officers, four hours to conduct a single rope rescue making it a labour intensive task. Each rescue costs the city roughly $5 000. With 16 rope rescues so far this year, many tax payers don’t think they should be footing the bill.
Emergency officials say most rescues happen not when people are standing safely at a viewing point, rather when they’re creating their own paths at the bottom of the waterfalls. That’s why some Hamilton city councillors told us they think a part of the cost should be passed on to person rescued.
