Heroin use on the rise

Experts say heroin is one of the most deadly, addictive drugs on the streets. For years, use of heroin was on the decline, and it was thought of as a dirty drug, not cool to use.

Since 2010 that has been changing. Halton police also reported a spike in heroin overdoses last summer.

Addiction experts say people will do anything to get their hands on the drug. It becomes an obsessive focus, so the lifestyle is involved in obtaining it and using it and then how can the user obtain more.

Getting off of it is not easy, but there is a number of programs available to help. Statistics show there are about 3500 people in Hamilton using methadone treatment.

Overdose prevention kits are free from the city, distributed by Public Health nurses and can be delivered. To get one, call Public Health at 905-528-5894.
