Coughing, an itchy throat, catching your breath, all symptoms you may have felt more strongly today, on day two of this heat wave. A special air quality statement was issued today for most of Southern Ontario, after the hot and sunny weather increased concentrations of ground-level ozone.
While poor air quality is a concern for everyone, experts are particularly worried about those suffering with breathing or lung problems.
“We notice people with cardiac or repository issues, the high heat can cause an exacerbation of those conditions so we do see an increase in those call.” Ian Sinclair, EMS
Horizon Utilities service in Hamilton and St. Catharines says electricity usage peaked at 3:30 this afternoon at 995 mega watts. That’s higher than last summer’s record peak but the utility is confidant it can handle the demand..
