Ontario’s Minister of Health and Long Term Care says Ontario is ready to contain and treat any potential cases of Ebola in our province.
Doctor Eric Hoskins gave an update on the province’s preparedness for the Ebola virus Friday morning. He says the additional measures will go even further to protect both the public and our healthcare workers from the deadly disease.
The Interim Chief Medical Officer of Health, Doctor David Mowat, also spoke at the news conference. He says, “Thanks to the lessons of SARS in 2003, the province now has a faster, stronger capacity to anticipate, prepare for and respond to health emergency. Health professionals are responding to the alert appropriately by identifying individuals who could be potentially affected, taking enhanced infection protection precautions and testing. Our system is working as it should.
The ministry has designated 10 hospitals across Ontario to serve as referral centres for treatment, including Hamilton Health Sciences. Starting on Monday, the Ontario Health Laboratory will be able to test for Ebola which means Ontario will have access to test results even sooner. Mowat says even if the test results come back negative, the sample will be sent to the national micro-biology laboratory in Winnipeg for confirmation. There are no confirmed cases of the Ebola virus in Ontario.
