Wednesday, Hazel McCallion will attend her last city council meeting before she officially retires on November 30th after 36 years as Mississauga’s mayor. We sat down with the 93-year-old as she talked about what she says are her greatest achievements, and how she would like to be remembered.
(Could you have ever predicted this career that you’ve had in politics?) “No. It just happened.”
After about 25 years in the private sector, Hazel McCallion decided to run for office in Streetsville. First elected in 1968, she’s been in politics ever since.
(What’s the most enjoyable part of the job for you?) “The entire job is enjoyable. I like the administration because having come from the private sector where I was in charge in a management role, I enjoy the management. I enjoy working with staff of the municipality to get things done. To have policy on the books to control what happens day by day and so you know and of course I love being out with my people because I’d like to be remembered as a people’s mayor.”
