Abandoned in their nest, two baby Red Tailed Hawks were rescued by neighbours in Hamilton on Saturday afternoon. The neighbours in the area called animal control and a wildlife centre, but no one was able to reach them at the top of the 50 foot tree. Dan Hall, who lives down the street, came to the rescue. He put on a harness and climbed up the pine tree. Once at the top, he had the difficult task of trying to grab the birds with one hand while holding on to the tree with the other. One hawk almost fell out of the tree but Dan Hall was able to catch it and bring them both down to safety. The young birds were checked out by an expert with the “Open Sky Raptor Foundation” who will also take care of them until they are strong enough to be released. It is believed that the hawks are about a month old and they have gone a couple of days without being fed, so they are dehydrated. It should only be a few months until the hawks are fully recovered and healthy enough to be released.
