Hamilton’s oldest bowling alley to close

First Published:

It was a bittersweet reunion at the Sherwood Center today. People who have been coming here for decades came for one last bowl.

Christine Crooks met her husband here in 1968. The morning of her wedding she came for breakfast.

Almost five decades later, she’s back with her grandchildren to say goodbye.

From hosting the Ontario Open to Master Bowler Tournaments, the Sherwood Lanes have been a landmark on the East Mountain since 1959.

New ownership will take over in August, and bowlers say it’s the end of an era.

The employees and the regulars are hoping the new owners will re-open the bowling alley.

The new owners haven’t been disclosed yet, nor have their plans. Ward 6 Councilor Tom Jackson is hoping to meet with them before they submit any building permits.

Tomorrow is the last day the lanes will be open to the public.
