After months of worrying, wavering and wondering about transit improvements the City of Hamilton will finally get a definitive answer from the province on just how much of the bill Queen’s Park is willing to cover.
During Mayor Fred Eisenberger’s first go-around, city council was ready to back a new LRT line stretching from Eastgate Square to McMaster University, but from there to here, it’s been a bumpy ride.
Support for the LRT dwindled under Bob Bratina’s tenure as mayor, with many councillors changing position, and calling for significant improvements to bus service from the HSR. There was some confusion over whether council was behind the light rail project or not and questions as to whether the province was willing to fund 100% of the cost.
Earlier this year, with Eisenberger once again in the mayor’s office, talk about LRT began again and a few months ago the mayor emerged from a meeting with Kathleen Wynne, to say the premier was promising to cover the full cost for LRT. Since then both the Premier and Transportation Minister Steve Del Duca have been non-committal, neither confirming, nor denying the mayor’s claim.
Tomorrow at 8am we will get a formal answer on LRT in Hamilton, as the premier has scheduled an announcement at that time, on the campus of McMaster University. Even now there are questions about what she will say but it appears that the province has imposed two conditions. First, the line will terminate at Queenston road and not Eastgate Square and a spur line will be built to one of the two go transit stations downtown.
When asked for clarification of what’s coming up tomorrow the Premier said, wait and see.
