Hamilton Police are marking the beginning of Support Our Troops month with a ceremony at central police station.
Local military representatives, police services board chair Lloyd Ferguson, and police chief Glenn De Caire are participating in the ceremony that includes the raising of the Canadian Forces Ensign. De Caire summed up what the ceremony was about: “The life pressures can be extreme and we know this all too well.”
“Support through events like this today are meant to show our support that we and we that stand as Canadian, we do indeed care and we care about you in your role and in your work. We care about your dedication. We care about commitment and it is very much appreciated and very much applauded.”
This year the police service is honouring the late Cpl Nathan Cirillo and the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, based in Hamilton. Cirillo was the Hamilton soldier shot and killed by a gunman last October while standing on guard at the National War Memorial in Ottawa.
It was attended by members of the Cirillo family. For his mom Kathy and his sister Nicole, it was a very, very emotional day.
Several members of Hamilton Police who are currently in the military reserves are also attending in their military uniforms.
