A fire that claimed the life of a 26-year old woman in Hamilton’s east end last night has now been ruled a homicide. 26 year old Renee Neganiwina is the victim in this murder and her boyfriend, 37 year old Joseph Snelgrove is now charged with 2nd degree murder. Renee had lived in the house for the past year with Mr. Snelgrove. Neighbours report that the two of them would drink heavily and have loud fights.

The fire began just after 6 pm Wednesday. Fire crews did a search and rescue where they found Ms. Neganiwina on the 2nd floor without vital signs. She was alive at the time but police would not confirm if it was the fire that killed her, or if she had other injuries. She died at Hamilton General hospital Wednesday night. Police were looking for Joseph Snelgrove after the fire, he eventually turned himself in to police in Toronto. He has since been transferred to Hamilton.

The forensic unit and the Fire Marshall’s office continue to investigate the scene.
