The Hamilton Accessible Sports Council kicked off its first annual Climbathon Fundraiser at McMaster University Sunday with a turnout over 100 strong.

It was a day all about breaking barriers with a number of accessible sports on display including sailboating, rope climbing and sledge hockey.

The showcase showed parents and the rest of community that truly everyone can take part in athletics.

Denise McArthur from the HASC was happy to see the the participants enjoying themselves and the challenge of the 16 metre-high climbing tower.

“Its been all smiles, there were a lot of people quite nervous when they first got here and looked way up that tower, but once they got up that tower and realized this is something I can actually do. There have been lots of happy faces lots of smiles.”

The tower was equipped with a harness so that even participants in wheelchairs could conquer the heights.

McArthur again,

“We’ve got accessible bicycles, an accessible sailboat in there. There has been fitness classes, bocce games. All kinds of things going in there, so people are realizing that I can do things just because I have a disability does mean there are things I can’t do.

Over $3000 has been raised so far. Organizers are hoping this will be the first of many events like today’s.
