Owners of a troubled Hamilton apartment building were a no-show today. They were expected to take a tour of the building, amid a growing list of complaints from residents and incomplete work orders from the city. At this point, even the superintendent is considering moving out.
The problems vary depending on who you ask, but tenants at 150 Sanford Avenue North say the building has major issues. One tenant showed photos of needles and feces in the hallway, and cockroach damage behind her fridge. The underground parking garage is littered with papers, coffee cups and discarded furniture. Incomplete city work orders clutter the building’s entrance.
There are also concerns about safety. There is a security system in place but it’s not working. “About a month ago we had Ottawa Locksmith to come up and fix our paddle, and the tenants broke it the next day” says Superintendent Rick Duciaume. “Our acting management company has been providing us with service now. There was obviously a time when their wasn’t much but there is stuff happening now.”
Contractors and pest control were seen going in and out of the building throughout the day – but residents say they’re kept in the dark.
“I’m worried as a tenant. What do I do? Is the building getting condemned? Do I move out? There are a lot of people moving out” says one tenant.
CHCH News reached out to Tourbillon Property Management for comment but they did not respond.
