Grandma is a dramatic comedy written and directed by Paul Weitz (Admission, Little Fockers). It was selected as the closing night film for this year’s Sundance Film Festival where it garnered favourable reviews, especially for the performance of its lead actress, Lily Tomlin. Starring alongside her are Julia Garner, Marcia Gay Harden, Judy Greer, Laverne Cox, Sam Elliott, Nat Wolff, and John Cho.

Elle Reid has just gotten through breaking up with her girlfriend when her granddaughter Sage unexpectedly shows up needing 600 dollars before sundown. Temporarily broke, Grandma Elle and Sage spend the day trying to get their hands on the cash as their unannounced visits to old friends and flames end up rattling skeletons and digging up secrets.

“I had had the idea (for the film) in different forms, but it only clicked when I worked with Lily on the film Admission,” Weitz explains. “I didn’t know her that well, but her intelligence rang like a clear bell. It made me think of a character and how much that character would have to offer a young woman under duress. I really don’t know though where it all came from. But I returned to the same dingy cafe every day to write it in a small white notebook.”

Grandma is rated 14A.
