Firefighters remain on scene battling hotspots after a massive fire destroyed an industrial building in Port Colborne.
The blaze broke out just before 7:40 a.m. Tuesday at the Vinyl Works Canada plant on Barber Dr.
Fire crews from Welland, Wainfleet, Fort Erie and Pelham were called in to assist with fire and stayed through the night to keep an eye on the smoldering wreckage.
Port Colborne Fire and Emergency Services says they are experiencing frozen equipment and are working to thaw the gear so they can return to the site.
In a news release sent Wednesday morning, Deputy Fire Chief Mike Bendia said the smoldering debris is producing smoke that is blowing towards the west side of the city.
“The Ministry of Environment air quality testing is within acceptable limits, however, residents are advised that if they have smoke in their area to continue to stay indoors with doors and windows closed. Ministry of Environment will be back on scene today to continue to monitor air quality,” said Bendia.
The large industrial fire sent large plumes of heavy black smoke into the air Tuesday morning prompting Niagara Region to issue a shelter in place order advising residents in the area to stay inside.
Firefighters wore self-contained breathing apparatuses and full protective equipment due to toxic fumes.
The Ministry of Environment will be back on scene Wednesday to continue to monitor air quality.
Barber Rd. and 2nd Concession along with Hwy 140 and 2nd Concession are closed until the scene is cleared by Port Colborne Fire and Emergency Services.
