While most people are enjoying this string of great weather, there are some consequences for the lack of cloudy and rainy days to start the summer. Thanks to dry conditions some municipalities, mainly in Niagara region have put a ban on all open air burning and that includes shooting off fireworks this Canada Day weekend.

“Anything from having a small campfire, cooking fire in your backyard, you can’t burn rubbish, and if you are an agricultural and have a permit we’re revoking them right now until the ban is lifted.” Monique Belair, St. Catharines fire department.

Whether it’s a roman candle or even a sparkler, the use of fire works in these conditions could cause a serious fire. As a result, the ban has put a bit of a damper on fireworks sales in the area. Which hurts since Canada Day is Christmas Day in this business with people spending big bucks.

According to the ban you can still buy your fireworks in St. Catharines, you just can’t light them here. But you can light them in Hamilton where there’s been only one open air fire ban in the last decade. Halton Region hasn’t issued any open air burning bans thus far either.
