Firefighters battle two suspicious fires near Binbrook

First Published:

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been called in to investigate two suspicious fires that happened overnight near Binbrook.

Several units from the Hamilton Fire Department responded to a blaze at a vacant home at 2275 Golf Club Rd. around 3:40 a.m. Thursday.

Fire Safety Officer Claudio Mostacci said crews arrived to find the home heavily involved in flames. Firefighters immediately began a defensive attack and managed to control the fire before it spread to any neighbouring buildings.

Roughly 40 minutes later, crews were called to a barn fire a short distance away at 1560 Westbrook Rd.

Mostacci said the barn was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived and the St. Catharines Fire Department was called in to assist.

Firefighters managed to knock down the blaze but crews are still on scene moving around the debris of the collapsed structure to extinguish hot spots.

Tanker trucks carrying water had to be brought in to battle both blazes because there are no fire hydrants in the area.

The cause of both fires and damage estimates have yet to be determined.

Despite their close proximity, Mostacci said it is not known if the fires are connected.

Hamilton police will also be on scene conducting their own investigation.
