An elderly woman is dead after an early morning fire in Brantford. The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office is now investigating. They’re still trying to figure out what caused the deadly fire.

Craig Avery lives across the street: “I saw flashing lights and all of a sudden I looked out the window and and there was a 6 foot blame bursting out.”

Fire crews were called to a duplex on George Street around 2:30 this morning.

“(What did you think when you saw the flames shooting out of the house?) Scared the living (expletive deleted) out of me.”

When firefighters tried to get inside, flames were shooting out of the front door.

77-year old Ethel “Jean” Bolton, who lived in the front unit of the home, wasn’t able to escape. Fire crews later found her body inside.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office is investigating but say it’s too early to say what exactly caused the fire. It started in the front of the house and you can see that’s where all the damage is.

Fire Marshal: “The front area of the house includes the living room a sitting room and a bedroom so all of those rooms will be looked at.”

A young couple and their daughter, who live in a back unit, made it out safely.

Steve Cross, son lives in home: “They got woken up by the fire department. Coming in to the apartment and the place was full of smoke.”

They were taken to hospital but are ok.

The fire marshal’s office says it will take some time to investigate and determine what caused this fire. One of the things they will be looking at is whether it was caused by careless smoking.  There’s no word yet on the cost of damage.
