Firefighters are battling a major blaze in Caledonia this morning.
Flames broke out in the Slack Plaza on Argyle Street North before 2:30 am, resulting in firefighters from multiple Haldimand stations being called out.
The fire appears to have been concentrated at the north end of the plaza, completely gutting a Buck or Two Plus store and causing the roof to collapse. Firefighters were warned of the possibility that helium tanks inside could explode.
Several other businesses occupy the main level of the plaza, including an Ontario Early Years Centre, a convenience store and a Montessori school. Apartments are on the upper level.
The building was evacuated safely, along with a nearby Tim Hortons.
Argyle Street North is closed in the area of the railway tracks, along with part of Orkney Street, and is expected to stay closed much of the day.
Damage is estimated at over $1 million.
