A German shepherd in St. Catharines named “Kaylee” helped a Niagara Regional Police Officer arrest a thief who’d just broken into her home. Kaylee led the officer directly to the suspect — and the goods he had just stolen from the house.
Here’s Kaylee today — oblivious to the fact that she helped catch a thief and retrieve the laptop and jewelery he had stolen from her owners.
Jeff Inglis: “We’re so happy we got everything back. I’m amazed by the dog. Amazed by the great efforts by the police.”
Jeff Inglis was on his way home from a funeral Tuesday afternoon when the thief broke in: “He came in through the back sliding door. Made it to the kitchen. Opened a bottle
of wine. Grabbed the laptop off the table. And the dog must have come around the corner. Startled him. So he locked himself in the bedroom. Took the jewellry. Then exited out the bedroom window.”
And ran to the back of the property toward the vineyard. By that time, Constable Jason McCarthy had arrived and Kaylee led him out to the back.
Jeff: “They didn’t see anything. But Kaylee wouldn’t leave it alone.”
She led Constable McCarthy out to the bush. Just as she did with our cameraman Dwight Penner today. The officer spotted the suspect hiding among the trees
Jeff: “Walked down through this thicket and long the trees. That’s where he saw the fella.”
Charged with break and enter is 39-year old Jean Lavalley of St. Catharines.
There have been a number of minor incidents in this neighbourhood. People stealing change out of parked cars. Just prior to the breakin at the Inglis home, neighbours noticed
a man riding up and down the street on a bicycle.
Constable McCarthy was so happy with Kaylee’s help he went back to take a picture with her and brought her a big marrow bone.
Police say a majority of the break-in’s occur during the day when nobody’s home. And it’s great to have a dog and an alarm system. But they also say that you should ask one of your neighbours to watch out for anything suspicious.
