Ellar Coltrane, the star/subject of Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, had a unique childhood to say the least. Starting from the age of 8, the Austin, Texas native spent a few weeks every year shooting scenes for Linklater’s quasi-experimental film and reuniting with his fellow cast members including professionals like Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette, and other kids like Linklater’s daughter Lorelei. It was a crazy idea, but since the film’s release Boyhood has received nothing but praise (we were quite fond of it).

We got a chance to sit down with Ellar and pick his brain about his involvement in the fascinating project. We also asked him about the soundtrack which includes a reference to a Beatles “Black Album” – a mixed cd Mason Sr. makes of the band member’s best solo works to give to Mason Jr. We compiled the track-list to that album into a YouTube playlist and embedded it below for your enjoyment.
