Coast to coast, Canadians will pause this morning at 11 am to remember the sacrifices of those who have served our country in the line of duty.
Governor General David Johnston, the Canadian military’s commander-in-chief, will preside over the main Remembrance Day ceremony at the National War Memorial in Ottawa.
Afterward, Johnston will host a luncheon at Rideau Hall to honour Sheila Anderson, the 2015 National Silver Cross Mother chosen to represent all grieving families.
Anderson’s son, Corporal Jordan Anderson, was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan in 2007.
Closer to home, the 713 Thunderbolt Squadron Air Cadets from Stoney Creek braved the rain over night to stand guard along the cenotaph at the corner of Queenston Road and King Street East.
The traditional all-night vigil is particularly special as it was cancelled last year amid security concerns following the murders of Corporal Nathan Cirillo and Patrice Vincent.
While Remembrance Day is not a statutory holiday in Ontario, there will be some closures.
Government offices and banks will be shut today, there will be no mail delivery and LCBO outlets as well as Beer Stores won’t open until noon
CHCH is broadcasting live from the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum during Morning Live today and carrying the Remembrance Day service commercial-free starting at 10:30 am.
