Elle is a French psychological thriller from acclaimed Dutch director Paul Verhoeven (Starship Troopers, Basic Instinct). The film is based on the novel “Oh…” by Philippe Djian and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year. It stars Isabelle Huppert, Christian Berkel, Anne Consigny, and Virginie Efira.

Michèle seems indestructible. Head of a leading video game company, she brings the same ruthless attitude to her love life as to business. Being attacked in her home by an unknown assailant changes Michèle’s life forever. When she resolutely tracks the man down, they are both drawn into a curious and thrilling game—a game that may, at any moment, spiral out of control.

“When Isabelle Huppert saw the movie, she said to me: ‘The most interesting aspect is the perpetual ambiguity.’ She’s right, it’s always ambiguous,” admits Verhoeven “It’s hard to completely grasp this woman. Everything is fluctuating, strands intertwine…I had already done that in other movies, particularly TOTAL RECALL—in a totally different genre—by combining dream and reality. At the end, you’re not sure what to think. It’s unclear. I like keeping options open. Just like in life, you never know what’s hiding behind a smile. Or not.”

Elle is rated 18A.
