Residents of a Sanford avenue north apartment complex complained for years about bed bugs, mice and other issues that weren’t addressed. But new owners have taken over, dropped a ton of money and turned the building around.
“Oh this building was a nightmare…I mean it was infested…they had bad people in here that weren’t very nice.”
Ontii Cromwell enjoys the view of Hamilton harbour from her 8th floor apartment but living at 150 Sanford avenue north hasn’t always been enjoyable. In February of last year, we did a story about the horrific conditions in the building; feces and needles in the hallways, garbage everywhere. Since then, Firm Capital Properties out of Toronto bought the building and brought in a new manager. They have kicked out all the troubled tenants and spent over a million dollars fixing the building up.
The hallways have been painted and are cleaned daily. Each unit has new appliances and cabinets and the manager is confident they’re on top of the bed bug problem. Rent in the low income building hasn’t been raised, it’s $725 for a one bedroom, up to $1150 for three bedrooms.
