There is a doctor shortage in Niagara and while it is not a new problem for the over 430 000 people who live in the area, little progress is being made to fix it.

In a bid to fill a shortage of doctors five years ago, Niagara region set out on an ambitious recruitment program. It was successful: 54 doctors were drawn to the area. But during those same five years, 48 doctors either retired or moved on. Combine that with an aging population the result is a long wait for patients.

The region makes regular presentations to medical schools in Ontario and internationally but says it’s the municipalities responsibility to negotiate any financial incentives.
