A little over 24 hours ago, a police shooting in Peel claimed a life. Witnesses say at first it appeared to be a routine traffic stop. But things quickly escalated and Jermaine Carby was shot and killed. His family members showed up at the scene this evening to lay flowers and grieve together.
“What these police are doing is wrong. They need to stop killing our youths, they need to stop.”
That was the sentiment among family members as they set up a memorial for 33-year old Jermaine Carby of Brampton who was killed last night by a Peel police officer.
Shanice Khan, relative: “We need justice for what’s going on, what happened with Sammy Yatim. We need justice. The other little black boy that they killed — we need justice. The police can’t go around doing stuff like this.”
Peel police say that Carby’s car was pulled over near the intersection of Kennedy Road and Queen Street East around 10 o’clock last night. The officer spoke with Carby and then requested backup.
Constable Thomas Ruttan, Peel Regional Police: “He did ask for backup but there was no emergency at that point. And then several minutes later, there was a push of the emergency button and obviously we have the sequence of events that has taken place since.”
That’s police were notified of shots fired.
Rebecca Osbourne, Witness: “A bunch of cops got out and then I heard five to six gun shots.”
About thirty officers arrived to the scene after the emergency button was activated. Carby was sent to hospital but died of his injuries. Witnesses have said that they heard police ask Carby to drop a knife several times.
Shanice Khan: “They’re saying something about a knife, but I heard from another witness that he was surrendering — he had his hands up.”
The Special Investigations Unit is looking into the shooting. They are a separate entity that investigate any incident where police are involved and a civilian is either killed or seriously injured. Currently they have one subject officer from Peel police and five other officers as witnesses. Once that investigation is done, then Mr. Carby’s family will get their answers.
