Daryl Waud registered his first CFL tackle on Tuesday night when the Toronto Argonauts opened-up their preseason with a loss against Winnipeg. Daryl Waud has been rotating across the defensive line, and seems poised to earn a roster spot with the team that drafted him twelfth overall last month.
The six-foot-five, 275 pound, rookie says he feels right at home among the veteran Argo linemen. “Obviously going down to New York for a mini camp, and then Washington for a short period of time, I think that helped me a lot with the transition from university football to pro football.” Waud is somewhat vague about his decision to leave the Redskins, where he had signed a contract. But he certainly doesn’t regret his choice. “It was a situation for me that I wasn’t comfortable in, and I gotta follow my heart, and follow my dreams and ultimately this is where I want to be.”
Argos head coach Scott Milanovich is glad to have him. “I like Daryl. I don’t want to be too complimentary of him because he’s a rookie, but he’s doing a nice job and coach Creehan is wearing him out, and he’s responding.”
Elsewhere at Argo training camp, Ricky Ray continues to take “mental reps” and help coach the other quarterbacks, Milanovich says he won’t be ready to start the season. Perhaps Ray might be ready in time for the Argos first tussle with the Ticats. That’s not until August third, Hamilton’s first home game of the regular season.
