CRTC approves CHCH channel change

First Published:

Good news for many digital antenna viewers of CHCH-TV.

The CRTC, Canada’s broadcast regulator, has approved a channel change and signal boost for CHCH-TV’s main transmitter in Stoney Creek.

Many viewers reported losing the station’s signal last August 15, after CHCH shut off its analog channel 11 signal, and moved its digital signal from UHF channel 18 to VHF channel 11. It was required to make the move because of Industry Canada frequency assignments.

Those who had UHF-only aerials could not receive the channel 11 signal. As well, those who did have VHF reception found the signal weak and unreliable. Many viewers in the Niagara peninsula lost the station entirely.

Channel 15 became available after Sun TV ceased over-the-air transmission last October. However CHCH will be putting out a stronger signal, from a higher point on the tower.

The equipment is on order; CHCH will update you when the project is close to completion. Over-the-air viewers will need to do a channel scan once transmissions have begun.

CHCH’s virtual channel will continue to be 11.1.
