Crews battle multiple-alarm fire in central Hamilton

First Published:

A townhouse in central Hamilton sustained roughly $100,000 in damage after an early morning fire.

Several fire crews were sent to a structure fire at a home on Cathcart St. shortly after midnight on Monday.

Firefighters attacked the blaze from the inside of the home. The fire started in the basement but travelled through the wall space up to the second floor attic.

Communications Officer Claudio Mostacci says the damage was mainly contained to one unit but the adjoining home did suffer some water minor damage.

No one was home at the time of the blaze. Officials say the cause of the fire was electrical and it is not considered suspicious.

A Hamilton firefighter was taken to hospital with an upper body injury. He was released a short time later and is doing well.
