Two people are presumed dead after a house fire in South Cayuga.

Firefighters were called to a home on Lakeshore Road just after 9 this morning after neighbours noticed smoke. The home has been destroyed and is now just a pile of rubble; a vehicle that was parked near the house is also a charred wreck.

Haldimand fire chief Rob Grimwood says the house was engulfed in flames, the roof collapsed, when he arrived. “We protected the neighbouring house from some impinging heat and controlled the fire from the exterior with about 30 firefighters from four stations in total.”

An investigator from the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office is on the way to the scene now.

CHCH’s Lauran Sabourin will have more on this story tonight on the Evening News at 6.
