The controversy swirling over Bill Cosby of multiple allegations of sexual assault followed him to the first of his three stand up shows this week in Southern Ontario.
But while there were people outside the theatre, inside the show went on without interruption.
Before the show, about 30 protesters were blocking the entrance way. People who had tickets seem unfazed. They just marched right on through the line. There was one minor altercation. But otherwise, it was relatively peaceful.
“What do we want? A Cosby free Kitchener. When do we want it? Now!”
Cosby fans entering the show were greeting by a number of protestors.
“Hey, hey. Ho, ho. Cosby’s gotta’ go.”
They wanted him to go.
“It’s important to everyone. But I think it’s important that although the show must go on, Canadians don’t support Bill Cosby.”
“I’m just here to support women who want to speak out and who are brave enough to do that.”
“They gotta’ think about the power dynamic that exists between powerful celebrities and the women they interact with and why would 27 women go to all that trouble to lie about something like that.”
But many people going into the show support Cosby and wonder why the victims took so long to come forward.
“I was a victim of sexual abuse from a very, very young age. I knew it was wrong and I spoke out. Why did they wait so long?”
Others said they didn’t want to judge.
“I have experienced in the family, being falsely accused of a crime and the judge, jury and hangman syndrome and I refuse to do that.”
Cosby is accused of drugging and raping a number of women. Three new women came forward today with allegations.
As protestors held up placards and shouted at people going in, security asked some to leave the property.
And while this was going on, there was an anti-Cosby show a few blocks away. The Kitchener police chief was there to show his support.
Kitchener Police Chief Bryan Larkin: “I think it’s really important for our organization to send a strong message of support for our partners and more importantly, the victims of sexual violence.”
During the show, Cosby did not mention the allegations or the firestorm outside. He joked about family, religion and his wife.
There were no disruptions inside and he received a standing ovation. People thought he was pretty funny.
“It was funny. He made me laugh.”
“I haven’t laughed this hard in months and months.”
The show was about half to two-thirds full and the protesters were still outside after the show.
Cosby will perform Thursday night in London and Friday night at Hamilton Place.
