Coping after cancer

Most patients expect the challenges to be over once they’re cancer-free. Lots of patients, however, find once that once their treatment is over, they feel lost. Their traditional treatment is over- but they still don’t feel like themselves. A program at Hamilton Health Sciences is hoping to help with that transition.

While she was looking for a way to cope with physical and emotional changes, Lina Fields found ‘Out of the Shadows’- a program offered through Juravinski Cancer Centre.

At a series of sessions, medical experts coach patients on topics like insomnia and improving quality of sleep, eating a balanced diet and exercising after surgery.

Facilitator, Margaret Forbes, says different types of cancer require different forms of after care. However in all cases, taking charge of your needs is the first step.
