Box of mail found on ground

Canada Post says it’s investigating how a box filled with mail was left on the ground next to one of the new community mailboxes on Hamilton mountain.

Yesterday was the first day the boxes were being used for about 36,000 addresses.

Margaret Wenglewick say it’s ridiculous that she found the box of mail last evening on East 16th Street, filled with what appeared to be government and personal cheques for residents of Concession and East 20th streets.  She’s worried more mail could be floating around.

Wenglewick called Canada Post and held the box at her home until representatives came to retrieve it about an hour later.

Spokesperson Jon Hamilton says it appears an error was made, given that it was the first day with the new community boxes.

A few of the mailboxes that were supposed to be installed by now are still not in service.  Door-to-door delivery will continue for those residents until the mailboxes are ready.
