The third Monday of January is dubbed “Blue Monday” and is known for being the most depressing day of the year. The concept of Blue Monday was first publicised in 2005 by holiday company Sky Travel, which claimed to have calculated the date using an equation that takes into consideration, debt, failed New Years resolutions and weather. Although Blue Monday may have been nothing more than a marketing strategy, it does bring attention to the mental health struggles many face in the winter months.

Executive Director at Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice and Clinical therapist, Clare Freeman says a common type of depression at this time of year is seasonal affective disorder, which is caused by the lack of light in the winter months. It’s much more than just having a case of the winter blues.

Light therapy, exercise and eating healthy may help those battling depression in the winter, especially on days where the sun is no where to be found.
