Big Hero 6 is the first animated feature film collaboration from Pixar and Marvel Studios. Based on a little known Marvel Comics property, Big Hero 6 follows the adventures of a group of college students and their trusty robot as they fight crime in the fictional city of San Frantokyo. Despite being self proclaimed “nerds” the group of scientists (and Fred) band together to form the superhero team to take down a masked villain plaguing the city. Led by wonderkid, Hiro Hamada (Ryan Potter) the team comprises of Wasabi (Damon Wayons Jr.), Honey Lemon (Genesis Rodriguez), GoGo (Jamie Chung), Fred (T.J. Miller) and the personal health care bot Baymax (Scott Adsit).

Like classic Disney movies, Big Hero 6 is more than just a funny, well animated film. Directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams the film brings loss and grief to the forefront in a touching, heartfelt manor. The film also does wonders by making science cool and accessible for a young audience. From exploring the actual science behind science fiction (in an audience friendly, animated sort of way) to making scientists relateable and not just stereotypical boring guys in lab-coats or crazy super villains. We get a sense of each character without detracting from Hiro’s plight. Hopefully we’ll see more of the other team members as the film no doubt launches sequels and with a six member team we’re expecting a lot of sequels.

The animation is incredible, in part due to innovations in animating software, but mostly because of the imagination of the animators. Each frame is packed with incredible detail and thought. Big Hero 6 was a delightful picture and you can check out our full film review here (warning spoilers).

The blu-ray + DVD combo pack does not disappoint. It’s worth it just for the Academy Award winning short film, Feast, which is delightful. The discs are packed with bonus features, from creating the hybrid city of San Frantokyo to developing the scene stealing Baymax the featurettes offer insightful looks at what went into crafting the film. Also for all those Pixar universe theorists out there, there’s even a special Easter Eggs feature that looks at all the gems the animators were able to sneak in from other movies.

Big Hero 6 is a fun film for any demo, but be warned, it will hit you right in the feels. The Academy Award winning animation hits home video shelves on February 24th.
