You may be shocked to learn that the fur lining on your winter coat or gloves, could actually be dog or cat fur. Most developed countries have banned the importation and sale of it but Canada hasn’t, at least not yet.

“it doesn’t really matter if we think it’s appropriate, cats and dogs fur is a byproduct of the food industry, cats and dogs are slaughtered for food, and the fur is given to garment makers they don’t even pay for it, so they’re thrilled to use it as trim on coats and gloves.” Marvin Ryder

Which means your favorite winter coat, or fur trimmed gloves could be made from the pelts of cats or dogs and right now in Canada, it’s allowed. That’s why Liberal MP Nathanial Erskine-Smith has put forward private members Bill C-246.

“To ban the importation and sale of dog and cat fur and to label the to the source of animal, same way it is in the states and European union.” Nathanial Erskine-Smith.

They will vote on the bill on Wednesday in Ottawa and if it is eventually passed it will ban the sale of cat and dog fur in this country, putting Canada on par with the U.S. where it is already illegal.

“Canada Goose jackets for example say they come from coyote, all companies should be held to the same standard, it’s a consumer choice issue.”

Experts say it will be hard to police however, as Chinese garment makers could just mis-label the fur.
