Autopsies are expected today on the five victims of Calgary’s worst-ever mass murder, a bloody and baffling attack on a group of university students.

The man charged in their murders is 22-year-old Matthew de Grood. His father is a veteran Calgary police officer.

The victims had been celebrating the last day of classes at a home near the University of Calgary when a man arrived at the party, grabbed a knife and began stabbing people.

Police chief Rick Hanson says the victims were all good kids in their 20s who had no prior contact with police. The accused was an invited guest at the party, and was a classmate of some of the victims.

It is alleged he targeted the victims, stabbing each of them several times. Police say there is no indication the suspect was drunk or had been doing drugs. There is no word on what motived the incident.
