Residents in the Upper Ottawa and Fennell area of Hamilton will be without water as crews begin to repair a water main break.

The westbound lanes of Fennell were were flooded for a few hours. It happened just after 2 this morning.

Crews managed to shut off the water and just before 3 and are expected to take several hours to repair the roads. It’s not clear how many residents are affected.

A major break last month at Upper Gage and Fennell left a huge sinkhole that took several hours to fix. Works officials say many of the watermains in that part of the mountain are as many as 60 years old, and coming to the end of their useful life.

Broken water main on Main near Nanwood; Brampton, September 16, 2014

Several business will also be without water this morning after a overnight water main break on Main near Nanwood drive in Brampton.

The pressure from the broken pipe created a large crater in the road.

A powerful stream of water was seen spewing higher than the street lights.

Crews managed to cap the pipe at 3 am. Work to repair the roads is expected to last at least 6 hours.

A section of the southbound lane on Main St will be closed as crews prepare to repair the break.

Editor’s Note: This article has been updated to correct the age of the pipes; they are of course nearly 60 years old, not 60 hours old. As well the location of last month’s break has also been corrected.
