Adjusting to Daylight Saving Time

We’re just a few days away from falling back.

Daylight Saving Time ends this Sunday. That means we’ll gain an hour in the morning. But the adjustment isn’t always easy. Here are just a few ways to cope with the time change.

This is definitely the easier time change of year because we get an extra hour of sleep in the morning. but even that small adjustment can mess with your sleep cycle.

It’s a day night owls and late risers look forward to.

“I’m really excited for the extra hour of sleep.”

But according to Dr. Raymond Gottschalk, the time change can be a slow adjustment for our bodies that are heavily regulated by light and dark: “You may only get about 6 to 10 minutes change per day.”

Thriving on routine, it’s especially tough for kids to adjust. Parents should try to keep their kids awake until their normal bedtime so they don’t wake up extra early.

“She’ll go to bed I guess an hour later. And then get her back up to speed. It takes about a week or so.”

Exposure to bright light in the evening can convince your brain to stay awake longer. But harsh light, like from computer screens, is overkill. Too much tablet time and you’ll have trouble falling asleep.

Dr. Raymond Gottschalk: “Early evening at around 6-7 o’clock at night. Bright light exposure at that time or even going for a brisk walk.”

If you’re walking before sunset though — be alert. “Fall back” causes a spike in pedestrian deaths at dusk.

Dr. Raymond Gottschalk: “Because the light has actually gone down and the drivers haven’t adjusted yet. So the drivers are not looking as carefully as they should.”

Tired drivers on their way home from work don’t have their headlights on yet and aren’t used to the dim light. So while you may enjoy that extra hour of sleep Sunday morning — be prepared for an adjustment.
