Back to school, also means back to school lunches and while lunch is meant to fuel kids for the day, it can also slow them down if packed with sugar. Experts say cutting sugar out of your children’s school lunch will keep them going and one of the biggest ways of cutting back, is by sticking to water.

Hamilton Public Health recommends adults have a maximum of 40 grams of sugar per day, or 10 teaspoons. Experts suggest parents aim to give their children no more than 25 grams of sugar per day.

Registered dietician Suzanne Neumann say you can give your child white milk but avoid fruit juices.
“Even 100% fruit juice is still a free sugar, so because it’s been pulled out of the fruit some fibres and minerals have been lost.”

To avoid added sugars, prepare snacks at home so you know can control the ingredients.
