The federal election is in 17 days from now, and today Lauran Sabourin takes a look at the candidates and issues in the riding of Niagara Falls.

Niagara Falls riding stretches from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Fort Erie. There are more than 100, 000 eligible voters here. Incumbent Rob Nicholson is Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. He’s represented this riding in total for more than 20 years. “Most people want to talk about the economy. They appreciate what we’re doing, keeping taxes
low, not adding any payroll taxes. I do hear that from small business people.”

Carolyn Ioannoni has been on city council 16 years. People are telling her, the issues here are “pretty much, jobs, jobs, jobs…the economy.”

Liberal candidate Ron Planche has always been behind the scenes of a political campaign. “I never thought I’d be back in politics, but here I am.”

Planche worked for Liberal MPP Kim Craitor when hundreds of jobs started going south. “We’ve lost so many jobs here in Niagara. We just need to invest in Niagara and Niagara’s future.”

There are 26 thousand tourist jobs in Niagara Falls, the industry is huge. Most of those tourist jobs are in small businesses.

Rob Nicholson is a household name in this riding, he’s been leading the polls since day one.

But with two and a half weeks to go until election day, they say 30% of the voters in Niagara Falls are still undecided.
