Many people across the nation have made the trip to Ottawa to tour the parliament buildings — and to see the National War Memorial. In fact, the city is only about a six hour drive from Hamilton. This animation shows us just how close the shootings were to one another in Ottawa. The first at the memorial near the Rideau Canal — just before 10am. The second, just moments later, inside the centre block on Parliament Hill.

The number of shots fired in the centre block was in the dozens. We took a close listen to the video shot by a Globe and Mail reporter and tried to count the shots but some of them happened so rapidly it’s difficult to tell.

However, the video we’re about to show does give us an idea of just how scary it was for the people inside during the shooting. Keep in mind the prime minister was only steps away.

It’s unclear how many of those shots were fired by the gunman, and how many were fired by police who were chasing him.
