Ron Joyce’s vehicles returned

First Published:

A high-end vehicle theft from a well known billionaire has lead to the arrest of a career criminal from Hamilton.

The billionaire is the co-founder of Tim Hortons, Ron Joyce.

Joyce says he bought this champagne coloured Rolls Royce new 10 years ago. His Tesla is only two years old. Both cars rolled back into his Burlington garage this afternoon, still dirty with the fingerprint powders police use to collect evidence.

The Tim Hortons coffee chain founder turns 88 years old this year and has lived in his house for 30 years. Yesterday morning when a staff member showed up for work, the garage doors were open and the Rolls and the Tesla were gone. The man door at the back of the garage had been forced open. The cars were unlocked, and the keys were inside.

Police arrested 38-year-old Leon Robbie Blais, who has a long police history in Hamilton dating back about 20 years, including robberies and gun crimes. He’s been charged with break and enter, stealing two cars, having stolen property and methamphetamine.

Blais appeared for a bail hearing this morning at Halton Region Court, but his case was put over until Tuesday, so he’ll remain in custody at least until then.

Police say they are not looking for anyone else involved in this crime, but Joyce wonders how one person could have been responsible.

He says the police knew where to find the cars.

Ron Joyce doesn’t know why his garage was targeted, although he has had a lot of work done on his property this year, and so a lot of strangers have been around.

But Halton Police say they have seen an increase in thefts of cars that are not kept properly locked, with the keys in a safe place elsewhere, and they urge residents to be careful. Ron Joyce installed new security today.
