Abandoned Houses in Hamilton

First Published:

Hamilton by-law officers met with the owners of the vacant home we showed you last night, issuing a pair of orders that will force the owners to fix the house and clean up the property within two weeks.

As soon as the story aired last night, many other concerned residents contacted us about neglected properties in their neighbourhoods.

It’s far from perfect, but it’s progress.

Neighbours are relieved today after the owners of the East Mountain home started to trim the grass and weeds.

Bylaw officers spoke with the owners of this home on East 25th this morning and said they were quite cooperative, they’ve been ordered to fix up the house and clean up the property.

The owner of the property contacted CHCH, saying she didn’t maintain the property because she’s been sick for the last year, and had deaths in her family, but neighbors say it’s been like this for 5 years.

And it’s not the only property in rough shape in the city, there are 421 vacant homes in Hamilton.

One of those houses is on Toby Crescent.

Neighbours say the house has been vacant for about 5 years, and there was a fire two years ago.

A house on East 44th isn’t registered as vacant, but neighbours say nobody has lived there for at least three years.

As for the East 25th house, the owners were issued a work order to fix the eaves and repair the shed, as well as cut the grass to below 8 inches long.
