WATCH: Footage released in deadly Toronto shooting

A post-mortem examination will be done Monday on the body of a Toronto woman who was killed in a drive-by shooting early Sunday.

31-year-old Jenas Nyarko moved to Canada from Ghana in 2001 and worked at a shelter.

Investigators say she was sitting in the backseat of a vehicle on her way home from a funeral when an SUV pulled up alongside and someone fired a single shot.

Police say the SUV had been circling the neighbourhood before the shooting.

They have released surveillance video of the suspect vehicle, which has been described as a silver or grey 2010 to 2016 Cadillac SUV with a sunroof.

Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders says the incident is indicative of what he calls a problematic “street gang subculture.”

According to Saunders, the city has seen five more shootings per month this year than last year.

He says it’s not a catastrophic situation but he still wants to lower the numbers.

There have been 47 homicides in Toronto so far this year — four of them within a 24-hour period this weekend.
