RCMP warn Ontario residents of phone scams

First Published:

The RCMP is warning the public about fake phone calls which appear to be coming from the RCMP.

The caller impersonates an officer and tells the victims that a large amount of money is owning on their personal taxes and that an arrest warrant has been issued for them. The caller then demands a large amount of money be transferred to them through a money transfer.

The callers are disguising numbers on Caller ID to trick people into answering the phone and trusting the caller.

The RCMP is reminding the public that they do not contact individuals through email or telephone for the purpose of collecting fines or taxes. If you have received similar calls or know someone who has contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
